Project Hail Mary is already proving to be one of the surprise theatrical success stories of the year. The Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi adaptation opened to roughly $140.9 million globally, marking the biggest debut of 2026 and one of the strongest openings for a non-franchise original film in recent years. The film has also drawn strong reviews and audience scores, reinforcing the appetite for large-scale original science fiction at the box office. But beyond its commercial success, Project Hail Mary carries several intriguing Indian connections, both in front of the camera and hidden within the film’s details.

One of the most notable links is actor Priya Kansara, who voices the AI aboard the spacecraft in Project Hail Mary. Well known for her breakout performance in 2023 film Polite Society after appearing in Bridgerton Season 2, Kansara has quickly become one of the most exciting British-Indian talents to watch. In Project Hail Mary, Kansara voices Mary, the onboard artificial intelligence interacting directly with Gosling’s stranded astronaut named Ryland Grace. Unlike typical voice roles, she performed live on set, giving the lead actor someone to respond to in real time.
In an interview with Mid-Day, Kansara described the experience as “a masterclass” and “an opportunity to learn from people I’ve long admired”, highlighting how the role pushed her into a major Hollywood production environment.
The film’s Indian links don’t stop there. One of the film’s producers, Aditya Sood, recently revealed to The Hollywood Reporter India, that Project Hail Mary contains subtle references to India woven into the production design. He hinted at personal tributes and additional understated nods embedded throughout the film.
“They surprised me by writing my parents’ names into characters in the movie,” Sood told the publication. “The little girl who asks about the Petrova line is named Rekha, that’s my mom’s name. And a scientist character was named Narendra, after my dad.”

However, after final edits, the names unfortunately had to be cut out of the film. Regardless, makers wanted to find a way to contribute to the film’s world by illustrating a world of characters. “They didn’t tell me this, but they put a little badge on his jacket that says ‘Dr. N. Sood.’ It was one of the very last visual effects they added,” Sood explained. “I didn’t tell my parents and they were completely blown away when they saw it.”
Taken together, these elements make Project Hail Mary feel bigger than just another space survival story. It goes without saying that the film’s visual effects are its biggest strengths, but something that takes viewers by surprise is the connection between the alien, Rocky and the protagonist, Ryland Grace, portrayed by Ryan Gosling. Think Jadoo but with an AI voice!
Jadoo, the iconic alien from Koi… Mil Gaya, is often seen as Bollywood’s heartfelt answer to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Starring Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta, the film struck a chord with audiences back in 2003 and all those years later, many couldn’t ignore the striking parallels between the two stories of friendship with an otherworldly being. The comparison became so culturally ingrained that Sony Pictures India leaned into it, releasing a playful crossover promo featuring Gosling and Roshan where they discussed their respective films and the alien companions that made them unforgettable.
The bonding and friendship between Goslings’ character Grace goes to show the extent of human emotions reflecting within an interdimensional being. The music is also a quiet gamechanger throughout the film’s entirety since it actively evokes human emotion. The score blends playful, almost curious tones with sleek futuristic elements, mirroring the evolving relationship between Rocky and Grace. As their communication grows from confusion to trust, the music shifts too, using light, whimsical motifs alongside more expansive sci-fi textures to culminate in a genuine sense of bonding. It’s a reminder that sound can carry emotion even when language fails, and here it amplifies the narrative by making their connection feel intuitive, warm and deeply human despite the vast, alien setting.
The result is a blockbuster that balances spectacle with personality. The science is ambitious, the tone hopeful, and the casting gives the film an added layer of warmth and relatability.
As Project Hail Mary continues its strong theatrical run, these Indian connections serve as a reminder that modern Hollywood hits are increasingly collaborative and multicultural, sometimes in ways audiences only discover after the credits roll.
