With more than 160,000 posts on TikTok under the #Asoka tag, this trend involves creators dancing to the song ‘San Sanana from the 2001 film, Asoka starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor.
The trend is not so much about the film itself. Rather, the rhythm of the song is used by creators to make sharp hand gestures to mark transitions in their videos as they create some bold makeup looks. Yes, some people have aimed to emulate Kareena Kapoor’s strikingly heavy, dark eyeliner and geometric patterns on her face. But the majority of TikTokers have actually created show-stopping bridal-style looks, complete with warm, gold or bronze eyeshadow, thick eyeliner, contoured cheekbones with a soft pink blush, and glossy lips. To accentuate the Desi glow, they’ve adorned themselves in jhumkas, necklaces, bangles and a bridal veil that’s highlighted in a silhouette transition scene.
According to Forbes India, Sita Suwarnadwipa is the creator behind this trend. Her original video of six million likes and more than 85 million views has prompted some of the most popular South Asian TikTokers to follow her lead and create their own version. In Australia, Indian beauty influencer Rowi Singh has shared her own Asoka makeup pics (rather inspired by Kareena Kapoor's OG look in the movie, as opposed to the trend). Plus, creators from other countries from Vietnam to the Philippines and Brazil have also felt inspired and filmed their own versions.
