Priyanka Chopra Jonas continues to demonstrate her exceptional versatility as an actor in new action adventure, The Bluff.

First-look images have just dropped of Priyanka tackling sword fights and brawls as heroine Ercell “Bloody Mary” Bodden, a pirate “who navigates a treacherous battle against her violent past to protect her family”.

Viewers can expect gripping action, but also the powerful exploration of family, connection, survival and the enduring strength of a mother’s love. The plot revolves around Ercell, who thought she had well and truly escaped her previous violent life as a pirate. She has settled into peaceful life in the Cayman Islands with her loving husband T.H. (Ismael Cruz Cordova), their son Isaac (Vedanten Naidoo) and her sister-in-law Elizabeth (Safia Oakley-Green), but her world is turned upside down when her notorious former captain, Connor (Karl Urban), arrives seeking revenge.

Ercell is forced to confront dark secrets from her past, and as the film’s official press release states, her “fight to save her family becomes a journey of redemption, as she reclaims her power and embraces the warrior she once was”.

In this TikTok video back in 2023, we explained how Priyanka filmed this movie in Queensland, where a series of picturesque locations doubled for the Cayman Islands. The movie’s obviously been a while in the making, but the countdown has now officially kicked off until it premieres globally on Prime Video on February 25 this year.

On Sunday, Priyanka was a presenter at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards, where she presented the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a TV Series Drama with BLACKPINK’s Lisa to The Pitt starNoah Wyle. Speaking on the red carpet at the Hollywood event, she told AP that this movie was particularly monumental in her career, as she was not only acting, but also a producer.

“This is my first time producing, which is incredibly exciting,” she told AP. “I get to take on a role that is quite rare for women, that of a female pirate. Many of them were around in the 1800s. We’re aiming for a rated ‘ARR’, it’s going to be a bloody film and a lot of fun,” she added.

It’s been over a decade since Priyanka made her Hollywood debut in Quantico, after an already well-established career in India’s blockbuster Hindi-language film industry, Bollywood. Just as she challenges gender stereotypes by playing a female pirate in The Bluff, Priyanka has consistently strived to push the envelope across various genres in the last 10 years.

When I interviewed her ahead of the release of Love Again in 2023 (I was working at Refinery29 Australia at the time), she spoke to me about the importance of a brown woman playing the female lead in a Hollywood rom-com – a genre that has so often featured us as merely the sidekick best friend or a brown stereotype, failing to cater for the appetite of South Asian women who want to feel represented in multiple layers.

“I will say the journey to get here wasn’t easy for me, and I enjoyed a tremendous, amazing career back in India when I started looking for work in Hollywood,” she said at the time.

“It was difficult for people to comprehend a brown girl being in this very, very specific genre which has not been enjoyed by us [South Asians] in English-language entertainment. Of course, we have romantic comedies in Hindi-language entertainment, but we don’t have leads in this genre [in Hollywood] specifically that are Indian,” she said.

“I do think it’s path-breaking. And I do think that being able to do this movie, being approached for it, and having this incredible experience working with this collaboration of actors, was great.”

She added: “We definitely need to see a lot more Indian representation in entertainment… we have an incredibly huge, robust film industry in India, [in fact] multiple film industries in India, that provide technical support to a lot of Hollywood movies. So it’s high time we see a lot more representation.

“I hope this movie [Love Again], my other show Citadel and with a lot of other work where you’re seeing Indian talent in the forefront, that we will be able to enjoy the space that we deserve in entertainment.”
