It was back in June last year when we first spoke to Avneesha Martins, and a lot has happened since then. Besides being a TikTok sensation and an incredible singer, she has made her mark in the Aussie breakfast radio world – a landscape that very rarely showcases the talents of South Asian women.
After hosting CADA's Sydney breakfast show for a year, Avneesha and co-hosts Kian Oliverand Yaz Haddad finished up at the ARN station at the end of 2023. But it's not the end for this hilariously entertaining trio. In fact, it really is the start, as they dip their toes into podcast land to forge a new brand and tone that pushes the boundaries.
We caught up with Avneesha, Kian and Yaz to hear more about their plans for 2024, and what to expect from their new podcast, Already Cancelled.
Congrats on the podcast, Already Cancelled and sorry to hear about finishing up at CADA. What made you decide to start the podcast in 2024?
We had a wonderful time at radio and being on the breakfast show. We used to always joke about starting a podcast and eventually thought, why not pursue it?
We wanted to create a space where we could explore ideas, share stories, and discuss topics that might be too hot to handle, and a podcast seemed like a perfect environment for that.
How would you describe the podcast and what topics it will cover? The podcast scene is very saturated, so what differentiates Already Cancelled from the many other podcasts out there?
It’s about diving into unpredictable waters of pop culture, media, society, and everything in between. We tackle the topics that everyone is talking about but with our own unique twist.
However, we also cover topics that people might be a bit afraid to talk about. We’re also big on engaging with our listeners/community via social media.
How would you describe the on-air dynamic between the three of you?
A lively dinner conversation among close siblings. Making even the most challenging topics accessible and engaging.
We love the name of the podcast, Already Cancelled. Is there a story behind the name?
The name was born out of a bit of a joke, really. We noticed how quickly things tend to get “cancelled” in today’s fast-paced cultural landscape, and we thought, “Why not embrace it?”
Our podcast is a space where we talk about anything and everything, from the serious to the utterly ridiculous, without the fear of stepping on eggshells. We felt the name “Already Cancelled” was a perfect way to sum up what the podcast is about.
Do you plan to invite guests onto the show this year, and if so, who’s on your dream list?
We’re always looking at having exciting people, different viewpoints and subject matter experts on the show. We have an extensive list of people we’d love on the show, honestly, there’s too many to name!!
Is there anything else you'd like listeners to know about the show?
The essence of Already Cancelled is about diversity and thoughts, experiences and discussions that challenge, inspire, and entertain our audience!
